After learning of the Philadelphia School District’s intent to stay the course for a total revamp of curricula surrounding social studies we were appalled quite frankly, but not shocked in the slightest.
The School District of Philadelphia has made headlines in recents years for the tireless outrage from the Israel lobby in the United States. Educators who have dared to pushback against the accepted rhetoric in our public school systems have been investigated, suspended, doxxed, harassed, and all the like.
It IS critical that as a society we employ teachers that have the ability to get students firing on all cylinders if you will. To foster an environment where learning can take place, not indoctrination, not narrative construction, not blanket propaganda, but critical thinking. The historical lens in which we have viewed national and international incident has always been flawed. Stories of government interference, CIA, and FBI nation-building, coup attempts, corporate lobbying in all sectors (INCLUDING THE APPROVED TEXT WE HAVE IN SCHOOLS) has shepherded us to becoming a very docile society.
To step away from the responsibility that we have to our children,(i.e. to not hinder their ability to learn) we do the following generations a great disservice.
In the midst of uncertainty, and when previously trusted individuals bring about harm or chaos, it presents a clear moment to evaluate methods. To fortify the values and ideas that you are building towards in order to better defend against those who bring about harm. But this is not where we are at today.
The inflamed climate in which this nation exists in today would have school district executives fold over sham partisan congressional hearings that evoke the very autocracy that “American values” claim to oppose. Our institutional will has been exposed, and it is clear that it is lacking in the spinal column.
